Taken in Ye Olde Murenger House, Newport. The pump used to be much larger and contained a model of a man featured in the pump. Rather than asking for a pint of Alpine Lager (or Ayingerbrau as it used to be called), locals would simply ask for 'a man in a box'. You can still ask for one even though he has long since disappeared.
Used to love ordering a pint of “Man in a box” shame they changed it.
I remember drinking the Ayingerbrau when I first started boozing in Merthyr Labour club, not sure if it was coz we was young or the beer was real good there, but we used to get hammered!
